The eating quality of carrots (Daucus carota L.) was investigated to evaluate the impact of cropping systems (one conventional and three organic systems) and growing years (2007, 2008, and 2009) on root size, chemical composition, and sensory quality. The content of dry matter, sugars, polyacetylenes, and terpenes as well as the sensory quality and root size were related to the climate during the three growing years. A higher global radiation and a higher temperature sum in 2009 as compared to 2007 and 2008 resulted in larger roots, higher contents of dry matter, sucrose, total sugars, and total polyacetylenes, and lower contents of terpenes, fructose, and glucose. Effect of organic growing systems on sensory quality and chemical composition of tomatoes Organic Eprints

Tomato plants were grown in open beds, confined beds, or combined beds with compost based on clover grass hay, deep litter and peat. Due to only minor effects of growing systems on sensory quality and chemical composition of tomato fruits is was concluded that it is possible to produce tomato fruits in confined and combined soil bed systems without any loss in eating quality. Actually the results indicate, that a slight increase in quality of tomatoes from the confined and combined systems is obtained. The present result points to the fact that confined and combined growing systems may be new relevant commercial growing systems, in which the quality of tomatoes seems to be ensured, and in which nutrient loss and root diseases contamination can be reduced.

Flavour and firmness are important quality criteria for tomatoes [1]. Tomato flavour is mainly attributed to the content of sugar and acid and volatile compounds. Many factors determine tomato flavour e.g. cultivar, growing system, maturity, harvest time and post-harvest treatments [1, 2]. In Denmark, organic tomatoes are grown directly in the soil. It is difficult, however, to provide enough organic manure, to prevent leaching out of nutrients and to control soil-born diseases in a soil system. The influence of the fungal pathogen Mycocentrospora acerina on the proteome and polyacetylenes and 6- methoxymellein in organic and conventionally cultivated carrots (Daucus carota) during post harvest storage Organic Eprints

Carrots may have to be discarded during post harvest cold storage due to development of fungal infections, caused by, e.g., liquorice rot caused by Mycocentrospora acerina. Control of this disease is mainly based on cultural practice. We compared the susceptibility of carrots grown under conventional and organic agricultural practices. We have developed a bioassay for infection studies of M. acerina on carrots and observed that organic roots were more susceptible after one month storage than conventional ones but no differences were apparent after four or six months storage.
